Casino Hotels

Four resorts in Canada, described by the same rule as everything else on this guide: what the building does without, and what stands in that place. For all four the absence belongs to the site rather than to the service. An island instead of a block, a slope instead of a plot, water instead of a single road, forest instead of a town. The gaming floor is not described here and not judged.

Casinos are for adults only. In Canada the minimum age is 19 in most provinces and 18 in Québec; elsewhere it depends on where you are.

Montreal Casino & Hotel

Île Notre-Dame, Montréal, Québec, Canada

Expo 67 pavilions on an island in the St Lawrence, with no street running around them

IWhat it does without

There is no street around this building. Standing on Île Notre-Dame in the St Lawrence, it has no block, no neighbours, no corner and no pavement leading past its door from anywhere else. Water and parkland take the place a city normally puts around a building of this size.

IIWhat stands there instead

Bridges and the park do the work of the missing streets. The complex occupies pavilions built for Expo 67, so its forms were made to be read from across open ground and water rather than from a footpath opposite. The approach happens by bridge, and the island holds gardens and the rowing basin.

IIIWhere it shows

It shows on the way in, when the last turn takes you over water and the building appears whole, from a distance, in a way that city buildings rarely do, with nothing built up beside it.

Fallsview Casino Resort

A Niagara resort built into the drop above the falls, with no level ground to stand on

IWhat it does without

Level ground is what this site does not have. The resort sits on the escarpment above the falls, where the land falls away sharply toward the gorge, so there was no flat plot to lay a plan on and no even approach from the road down to the river side.

IIWhat stands there instead

The section becomes the plan. Levels are stacked into the slope, so entrances arrive on different floors, and the public rooms, the theatre, the spa and the restaurants are ranged along the high side where the glass faces the water. Long internal routes replace the flat walk a level site would allow.

IIIWhere it shows

It shows in how you move through it: you enter on one level and reach the view from another. From the road above, the building reads as low; from the gorge below, it stands very tall.

River Rock Casino Resort

A Richmond resort on the Fraser where arriving over the water is part of the plan

IWhat it does without

Arriving by road is not the only way in here. The resort stands on the water near Vancouver with a marina of its own, so the land approach was never meant to carry every guest: a dock is built into the property as a second front door opening onto the river.

IIWhat stands there instead

The waterfront does that second job. Boats tie up at the marina, and the resort opens onto the river with a hotel, a show theatre, restaurants and a spa arranged behind it. The airport is close, so the site sits between the river, the flight path and the road all at once.

IIIWhere it shows

It shows in the plan of the ground floor, which faces two directions with equal seriousness. From the dock the resort reads as a river building; from the car park it reads as a road one.

Casino Rama Resort

A resort on Chippewas of Rama land by Lake Couchiching, with forest instead of a town around it

IWhat it does without

Around this resort there is no town. It stands on the lands of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation near Lake Couchiching, where the surroundings are water, trees and open ground rather than streets, blocks and other buildings. Nothing frames it except the landscape it was set into.

IIWhat stands there instead

The lake and the woods do that framing. The resort holds its own hotel, a concert hall, restaurants, a spa and a golf course, so the things a town would otherwise supply are gathered on one site. Roads run in from Orillia, and the parking, not a high street, meets the entrance.

IIIWhere it shows

It shows after dark, when the light from the building stops at the tree line and there is nothing beyond it. It shows by day in the drive, which passes through country all the way to the door.
